APRIL 21, 2026 - CLEARING THE CASE: THE MEDICAL EXAMINER’S ROLE IN ORGAN DONATION
If you can't watch the live webinar, you can still earn CE credits by viewing the recorded webinar posted after each event and taking the quiz.
SPEAKERS
Jeremy Benavides, LifeShare Medical Examiner Liaison/Forensic Outreach Coordinator; Philip Miller, Medicolegal Death Investigator IV / Forenic Air Unit - Remote Pilot in Command, the Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner; Crystal Yancey, BSN, MBA-HC, CCRN, CPTC, LifeShare Clinical Operations Manager/In-House Coordinator
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
Organ donation cases often intersect with Medical Examiner (ME) jurisdiction, requiring close collaboration to ensure that both the integrity of medicolegal investigations and the opportunity for lifesaving donation are preserved. Many clinicians are unfamiliar with how these processes work together, which can lead to uncertainty during time-sensitive donation situations.
This session will provide ICU nurses and providers with an inside look at how LifeShare partners with the Medical Examiner’s Office when donation occurs on every case. Participants will learn how donation cases are reviewed and cleared, how requests or restrictions from the ME are managed, and how organ donation can proceed while maintaining the integrity of forensic evidence and the pending medicolegal investigation.
Led jointly by LifeShare’s Medical Examiner Liaison and representatives from the Medical Examiner’s Office, this webinar will provide practical insight into communication, decision-making, and collaboration during donation cases. Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of the process and how their role supports both the investigation and the opportunity for organ donation.
OBJECTIVES
• Describe the role of the Medical Examiner in organ donation cases under medicolegal jurisdiction.
• Discuss the clearance process required before organ donation can proceed.
• Demonstrate how Medical Examiner requests or restrictions are addressed during donation planning.
• State how collaboration between LifeShare and the Medical Examiner protects both the forensic investigation and the opportunity for organ donation.
