STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
This training session provides a comprehensive examination of organ donation pathways, with a focus on distinguishing between Brain Death and Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD) role delineation. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the clinical and procedural considerations that guide eligibility and donor management in both scenarios. Emphasis is placed on the multidisciplinary nature of organ recovery, highlighting the distinct roles and collaborative responsibilities of hospital-based teams and Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs).

The course will guide participants, such as nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, social workers, etc., through each phase of the donation process—from initial authorization and family support to donor management, organ allocation, and operating room coordination. Practical strategies for communication, ethical decision-making, and inter-team collaboration will be explored through real case reflections and interactive discussion. By the end of the session, learners will be equipped with actionable best practices to enhance donor care, maximize transplant success, and support families during this critical time.

OBJECTIVES
• Differentiate between brain death and Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD) criteria as they relate to organ donation eligibility.
• Identify the key team members (OPO and hospital patient care team) involved in both brain dead and DCD organ donation cases and their specific roles throughout the process.
• Explain how coordination among multidisciplinary teams impacts the timing and success of organ recovery and transplantation.
• Discuss the logistics of donor management, organ allocation, and OR coordination, and how these contribute to successful transplant outcomes.
• Apply best practices for communication and collaboration in real-world scenarios involving both brain dead and DCD donors.
